OpenAI announced plans to merge the Chat and Work tabs within its ChatGPT desktop application, creating a single interface for both casual inquiries and complex professional tasks. The company stated this change is designed to allow users to transition seamlessly from brainstorming ideas to executing projects, such as building websites or creating presentations, within one conversation.
While the interface will be unified, OpenAI confirmed that Codex will remain a separate experience within the desktop application. The company plans to release the updated interface to a limited group of users for feedback in the coming weeks before initiating a wider rollout.
In addition to the interface changes, OpenAI will implement a new policy regarding usage allowances. Starting in December 2026, users on Plus, Pro, and Business plans will draw from a shared pool of tokens for both ChatGPT and Codex. The company noted that this adjustment coincides with the integration of agentic capabilities from the Work tab into the primary ChatGPT experience.
