A Lakewood police agent was killed and three other officers were wounded during a shootout at the intersection of West Colfax Avenue and Wadsworth Boulevard on Thursday evening. The incident began at approximately 6:30 p.m. when officers responded to reports of a suspicious person attempting to board a Regional Transportation District bus.

Lakewood Police Department spokesperson John Romero stated that the suspect opened fire on the agents within seconds of their approach. The suspect was shot by police and pronounced dead at the scene. In addition to the law enforcement casualties, a civilian was also injured during the encounter.

Authorities are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting. While a vehicle was observed crashed into the rear of the bus, police have not confirmed if that collision is related to the incident. It also remains unconfirmed whether the gunfire occurred inside or outside of the vehicle.

Colorado Governor Jared Polis addressed the loss, stating that law enforcement officers risk their lives daily and expressing his condolences. Romero noted that the department is supporting the families of those involved, describing the agency as a family that will remain united during the aftermath.

The investigation remains ongoing, and the Lakewood Police Department has indicated that further information will be released on Friday, Nov. 6, 2026.
