Following the general election on Nov. 3, 2026, two candidates affiliated with the Democratic Socialists of America secured mayoral victories in Los Angeles and Washington, D.C. These results bring the total number of DSA-affiliated mayors leading cities within the top 20 most populous in the United States to four.
In Los Angeles, City Councilwoman Nithya Raman defeated incumbent Mayor Karen Bass. In Washington, D.C., Janeese Lewis George won the mayoral election. They join Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani as the four leaders currently holding office in these major metropolitan areas, which have a combined population of approximately 14 million people.
Candidates in these races campaigned on platforms focusing on government services and affordability. Regarding her victory, Raman stated she is honored to be the next mayor and looks forward to working on the city's future. Lewis George noted that residents want to see what government can accomplish.
Raman is scheduled to take office in December 2026, while Lewis George is set to be sworn in on Jan. 2, 2027.
