Following the Nov. 3, 2026, general election, former Republican Gov. Tommy Thompson stated that Wisconsin has shifted to a blue state. The assessment follows a series of electoral losses for the Republican Party in recent statewide contests.

Rep.

In a post-election interview, Thompson, who served as governor from 1987 to 2001, argued that the state has returned to a political status it held prior to his tenure. He noted that the recent outcomes indicate the state is no longer purple, citing the lack of Republican success in statewide races as evidence of the transition.

The election results mark the end of a period of divided government in Wisconsin. Thompson characterized the current political landscape as a return to the state's historical leanings after several years of Republican control.
