Democrat Sean McCann has defeated incumbent Republican Representative Bill Huizenga to win Michigan’s 4th Congressional District seat. EST, following the election held on Tuesday, Nov. 3.
Reported figures indicate that McCann secured approximately 50.1% of the vote, while Huizenga received 48.3%. With 95% of precincts reporting, the margin between the two candidates was 7,385 votes.
McCann, who has served as a Michigan state senator for the 20th District since 2018, attributed his win to a campaign focused on direct engagement with voters. He noted that he held town halls throughout the district, a practice he claimed had been absent from the incumbent's recent tenure.
The 4th District, which encompasses Kalamazoo, Battle Creek, and areas along the lakeshore, has historically been a Republican stronghold with a Cook Partisan Voter Index of R+3. This race was identified as a key pickup for Democrats, who successfully flipped three U.S. House seats in Michigan during the 2026 midterms.
In a statement following the results, McCann expressed gratitude to his supporters and volunteers, while also acknowledging Huizenga for his years of service to the community. Huizenga had represented the district in the U.S. House since 2011.
McCann plans to travel to Washington, D.C., as early as the weekend following the election to begin the transition process. He also intends to schedule a series of town halls within the district to engage with constituents.
