The U.S. labor market saw a significant increase in professional and business services hiring during October 2026, adding 70,000 jobs to the economy. This performance represents a notable rise compared to the sector's average monthly gain of 15,000 jobs recorded over the previous year.

Across the broader economy, the United States added 165,000 jobs in October, contributing to a decline in the national unemployment rate to 4.1%. The professional and business services sector, which encompasses fields such as legal, consulting, and scientific research, had reached a low point one year prior to this latest report.

Heather Long, chief economist at Navy Federal Credit Union, noted that the recent job gains serve as an indicator that artificial intelligence is not causing a widespread elimination of white-collar roles. Long pointed to the increase in administrative assistant hiring as a particularly encouraging sign of labor market resilience.

While the data suggests that job growth remains robust, economists observe that artificial intelligence is actively reshaping the specific skills required for professional success. The shift indicates that while demand for white-collar labor persists, the nature of the work and the competencies expected of employees are undergoing a transition.
