Uber is reallocating its financial resources to address a significant shortage of drivers on its platform. During the company's third-quarter earnings call on Nov. 4, 2026, CEO Dara Khosrowshahi announced that funds previously earmarked for rider discounts will now be directed toward driver incentives.
The strategic pivot aims to increase driver activity to meet demand. According to Khosrowshahi, the company is currently facing a driver shortage described as the most severe it has seen in years. The last time the company implemented a similar increase in driver-focused spending was in 2021, following a shortfall caused by the pandemic.
While the move is intended to stabilize the platform's supply, it may lead to higher costs for customers. Khosrowshahi acknowledged the potential impact on users, stating that the policy change means riders may experience higher prices, a development the company is monitoring closely.
