Shares of Tesla and SpaceX declined in premarket trading on Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2026, following a series of Democratic victories in the U.S. midterm elections held on Nov. 3. Market reports indicated that stock prices for both companies fell between 4% and 8% as investors reacted to the shifting political landscape.
The market movement follows a significant financial commitment from Elon Musk, the CEO of both companies, who reportedly contributed between $445 million and $474 million to Republican candidates and political groups during the 2026 election cycle.
Democratic candidates secured key victories in Texas, with James Talarico winning the Senate race against Ken Paxton and Gina Hinojosa defeating incumbent Governor Greg Abbott. Additionally, the Democratic Party gained control of both chambers of the U.S. Congress, a shift that has prompted investor concern regarding potential regulatory oversight.
Analysts, including Dan Ives of Wedbush, noted that the change in political leadership in Texas presents new challenges for Musk, who must navigate the state's regulatory environment with a Democratic administration. Potential areas of focus for the new Congress include the oversight of SpaceX government contracts and the impact of state policies on Tesla's Austin gigafactory and SpaceX's Starbase facility.
Addressing the election results on X, Musk wrote, "Guess my election-interfering space lasers didn't work this time." He also mentioned that the prospect of building data centers in space appeared "pretty appealing right now."
