President Donald Trump issued a directive on Saturday, Nov. 7, 2026, for the U.S. Department of Justice to launch an investigation into Democratic members of Congress. The president accused several lawmakers of engaging in criminal conduct, specifically alleging that they have used extortion to threaten administration officials and Republican donors.

The president identified the alleged conduct as including threats of impeachment and other forms of punishment directed at officials, such as Attorney General Todd Blanche. Trump characterized these communications as a form of weaponization and stated that those involved should be held accountable.

The directive follows the Nov. 3, 2026, midterm elections, which resulted in Democrats securing control of both the House and Senate. Democratic lawmakers have publicly discussed plans to utilize their upcoming oversight authority to investigate administration officials, including Attorney General Blanche and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth.

In response to the president's statements, Sen. Elissa Slotkin, D-Mich., noted that previous attempts at legal action had not deterred her. Rep. Hank Johnson, D-Ga., has publicly stated his belief that the actions of the attorney general warrant impeachment and removal from office. It has not been confirmed whether the Department of Justice has formally initiated an investigation in response to the president's order.
