A Texas man who relocated to South Korea two decades ago has built a career in agriculture and food preparation, moving away from his roots in the United States. Ryan Phillips, 47, settled in the country following a personal breakup and has since established himself as a local business owner.
Phillips currently operates a farm known as Bearfoot Gardens located in Seoul. In addition to his agricultural work, he has incorporated traditional American culinary techniques into his business by smoking meat for the local market.
Reflecting on his two decades abroad, Phillips has indicated that he has no plans to return to the United States. His transition from life in Texas to a permanent residence in South Korea was detailed in an essay published on Nov. 6, 2026.
