The Democratic Party achieved a significant shift in Texas politics during the Nov. 3, 2026, midterm elections, flipping key statewide offices and gaining control of the Texas House of Representatives for the first time since 2002.

In the U.S. Senate race, Democratic state Representative James Talarico defeated Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton, securing approximately 59.4% of the vote. This result marks the first time a Democrat has won a statewide race in Texas since 1994. Talarico stated, "We just took back Texas."

The gubernatorial race saw Democratic state Representative Gina Hinojosa defeat three-term Republican incumbent Governor Greg Abbott with 52.8% of the vote. Hinojosa is set to become the first Democratic governor of Texas in over three decades and the state's first Latina governor. Following her victory, she remarked, "We shocked the world tonight. We showed that anything is possible."

U.S. Senator Ted Cruz characterized the election results as a "blue tsunami" and a "Watergate-level repudiation" of Republican leadership. Cruz attributed the shift to voter frustration regarding economic insecurity and the cost of living, noting, "Texas, at least today, is blue."

The incoming administration and state officials are scheduled to be sworn in in January 2027. Reports indicate that some Republican lawmakers have called on Governor Abbott to consider limiting the powers of the governor's office through a special session before his term concludes.
