As of Nov. 6, 2026, the final composition of the U.S. Congress remains undetermined as the Associated Press continues to process results from several uncalled contests. While Democrats have secured majorities in both the House and the Senate, election officials are continuing to count ballots in accordance with state laws.

In the Senate, two races have yet to be decided. In Alaska, the contest features four candidates and utilizes a ranked-choice voting system; because no candidate reached a 50% majority, the race may require additional rounds of counting later this month. In Mississippi, the margin between candidates is fewer than 2,000 votes, and officials are currently processing a significant number of affidavit ballots.

The House of Representatives also has outstanding contests, with 26 seats reported as too close to call as of Nov. 5. Some of these races, particularly in California, involve two candidates from the same party, meaning the party affiliation for those seats is already determined even as the final vote tallies are finalized.

The 120th Congress is scheduled to convene in January 2027, by which time all remaining ballots are expected to be fully processed and certified.
