A federal tax credit program designed to assist with educational expenses is scheduled to begin on Jan. 1, 2027. The initiative allows individuals who contribute to approved nonprofit scholarship-granting organizations to claim a federal tax credit for their donations.
Under the program, individuals may claim up to $1,700 in tax credits, while married couples filing jointly are eligible for up to $3,400. The credits are intended to cover various educational costs, including tutoring, services for students with special needs, and other learning materials.
Tracie Canestrari, a former public school teacher and member of the National Education Association, noted that the program is intended to benefit students regardless of their current school enrollment. She stated that the initiative provides resources for students and relief for educators.
The National Education Association has expressed opposition to the program, characterizing it as a private school voucher system that could divert funding away from public education. Canestrari argued that such descriptions fail to accurately reflect the operational details of the program.
As the launch date approaches, state governors are currently evaluating whether their respective states will participate in the program. Estimates indicate that up to 90 percent of students nationwide could qualify for assistance under these new provisions.
