While artificial intelligence has significantly boosted individual productivity, the technology has yet to reach its full potential in transforming organizational operations. According to a recent article by innovation professor Enrique Dans, the current landscape of enterprise AI is still waiting for a breakthrough comparable to the 2017 introduction of the Transformer architecture.

The 2017 paper, titled Attention Is All You Need, served as the technical foundation for the current generation of AI tools. Dans notes that while the paper is difficult to read and academic in nature, it remains a historic milestone that fundamentally changed the trajectory of the technology.

Dans argues that current AI development is too focused on individual tasks rather than the complex requirements of a company. He suggests that a true organizational breakthrough must address the need for systems that can preserve state, coordinate specialized capabilities, enforce authority, and adapt over time.

For Dans, a future Transformer moment in the enterprise sector would represent an organizing principle that provides a unified design for management challenges like governance and continuous learning. He maintains that while individuals can complete tasks, organizations require a more robust framework to manage their operations effectively.
