6 in MarketWatch suggests the party should consider utilizing tariffs as a tool for economic strategy. Author Jon Toomey argues that this approach could allow Democrats to reclaim arguments centered on the defense of manufacturing workers and domestic production.

The analysis contends that attributing current affordability issues to tariffs on manufactured goods is an inaccurate diagnosis. Instead, the report points to September consumer-price index data to highlight the primary drivers of inflation. During that period, gasoline prices rose 34.2% over the preceding year, while piped natural gas increased 5.0% and electricity rose 4.4%.

Other sectors showed more moderate growth, with shelter costs up 3.2%, groceries up 1.8%, and consumer goods excluding food and energy up 0.7%. The Energy Information Administration attributed the rise in energy costs to global supply factors, noting that Brent crude oil prices averaged $114 a barrel in September, an increase of $23 from August, due to attacks on Middle East oil infrastructure and tankers.

Toomey suggests that by embracing the tariff policy previously used by President Donald Trump, Democrats have an opportunity to pivot their economic platform. The article maintains that shifting focus toward domestic manufacturing could provide a more effective response to the current economic climate than current criticisms of trade policies.
