Elon Musk indicated on Nov. 6, 2026, that SpaceX may pursue the acquisition of a major telecommunications company to challenge established wireless providers. The company is exploring options to integrate satellite and terrestrial connectivity, following reports of discussions regarding a potential deal involving EchoStar and its Boost Mobile brand.

SpaceX has already invested heavily in wireless spectrum, including a recent $8 billion purchase from Grain Management and a previous $17 billion acquisition from EchoStar. These moves follow reports that major carriers, including Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile, declined requests for network access, prompting the company to seek alternative methods to enter the $235 billion U.S. wireless market.

Musk stated that if SpaceX can demonstrate more effective use of spectrum than legacy carriers, the company could acquire those firms to utilize their assets. However, industry analysts noted that any acquisition of Boost Mobile could face complications, as existing lease agreements with major carriers may require their approval for a transfer of control.

Deutsche Telekom CEO Tim Höttges estimated that building a competitive network would require at least €200 billion in investment. He noted that if SpaceX has the necessary capital, they would be a significant new participant in the industry.

SpaceX has a multi-year partnership with Qualcomm to deploy 5G infrastructure starting in 2027. The company aims to launch a combined satellite and terrestrial wireless service by early 2028, though no formal acquisition agreement has been announced at this time.
