Following the midterm elections held on Nov. 3, 2026, the Democratic Party has secured control of both the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate. This shift in legislative power sets the stage for a divided government during the final two years of President Donald Trump's term.

U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, a Democrat from New York, discussed the party's upcoming priorities and strategies during an interview with NPR host A Martínez on Nov. 5, 2026. The Democratic platform focuses on addressing government corruption and lowering costs for Americans.

The transition of power follows significant Republican losses in the midterms, which also prompted Speaker of the House Mike Johnson to announce he will step aside as the top House Republican when the new Congress convenes. Lawmakers are scheduled to begin the new session in January 2027.
