Semiconductor stocks are currently grappling with a significant crisis of confidence as investors weigh the long-term sustainability of demand for artificial intelligence infrastructure. Despite a 50% increase year-to-date, the PHLX Semiconductor Index (SOX) has fallen 30% from its June 2026 peak as of the close of trading on Oct. 30, 2026.

Bernstein analyst Stacy Rasgon noted that the sector has undergone sharp multiple compression. The index was trading at approximately 16 times forward earnings estimates at the end of October, a decline from the 28 times multiple observed during the peak in June.

This market shift follows recent earnings reports from major cloud computing firms. While these disclosures confirmed that capital expenditure on AI infrastructure remains robust, they also highlighted investor concerns regarding rising debt levels, potential delays in project buildouts and dwindling cash flows.

Rasgon suggested that the current market outlook may be overly pessimistic. Although investor sentiment remains cautious, the continued heavy spending by large technology companies on AI initiatives indicates that the underlying demand for semiconductor technology persists.
