Technology stocks experienced a sharp decline on Thursday, Nov. 5, 2026, as investors reassessed the outlook for artificial intelligence infrastructure following the Democratic Party's victory in the midterm elections held on Nov. 3.

The Nasdaq Composite fell 5.5%, while the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index saw an intraday decline of approximately 11%. Market participants are responding to concerns that the new political landscape could lead to stricter regulatory oversight and potential construction moratoriums on power-intensive data centers.

Data indicates that roughly 39% of planned U.S. data center capacity is located in Texas, Ohio, and Georgia. Incoming governors in these states campaigned on platforms that included restricting or pausing new infrastructure projects, and U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders has also called for a national moratorium on data centers.

Melissa Brown, global head of investment decision research at SimCorp, noted that investors are recognizing a potential slowdown in the pace of AI infrastructure development. Brown stated that while a complete halt seems unlikely, any deceleration could impact the AI growth narrative, which has relied heavily on rapid infrastructure expansion.

The market reaction reflects a shift from a previously permissive regulatory environment. Teddy Schleifer, a reporter for the New York Times, suggested that the industry is moving away from a period of unencumbered growth, as investors now factor in the possibility that increased oversight could raise costs or delay essential projects.
