A significant decline in the correlation between individual stocks reached a record low on Nov. 3, 2026, dropping to 0.56. This metric, which typically hovers around 1.0, serves as an indicator that the broader market may be losing its synchronized movement.

MarketWatch analyst Michael Kramer noted that the Nov. 5, 2026, stock market selloff was not unexpected given these low correlation levels. Kramer explained that when correlations are low, the traditional market dynamic where a rising tide lifts all boats ceases to function, meaning gains in isolated sectors are no longer sufficient to support the wider index.

The current market environment faces the risk of a reversion to the mean, a process where correlations return to historical norms. Kramer suggested that even if technology stocks see a temporary recovery, such gains may lack sustainability. As the market adjusts to these typical correlation patterns, analysts anticipate the possibility of continued volatility.
