New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani discussed the societal impact of artificial intelligence and the future of data center development in an interview published by WIRED on Nov. 3, 2026. The conversation, conducted by Global Editorial Director Katie Drummond for the Uncanny Valley podcast, explored the intersection of emerging technology and public policy ahead of the midterms.
Mamdani reiterated his support for a one-year moratorium on the construction of data centers within New York State. When questioned about potential policies to implement following this pause, the mayor did not outline specific legislative steps, instead emphasizing the necessity of acknowledging the broader costs associated with AI infrastructure.
The mayor raised concerns regarding the lack of transparency from AI firms, suggesting that the current opacity prevents the public from evaluating the true societal costs of individual AI queries. Mamdani also highlighted the personal impact of AI-generated content, noting that deepfake videos depicting him have successfully misled members of his own family.
During the interview, Mamdani also addressed surveillance practices at Madison Square Garden. He stated his opposition to the use of surveillance technology by James Dolan at the venue, marking his first time addressing the matter on the public record.
The discussion touched on the potential for an AI bubble and the need for increased outside scrutiny of companies operating in the sector. Mamdani, who was sworn into office on Jan. 1, 2026, used the platform to address how his administration views the balance between technological growth and public trust.
