Meta has announced plans to discontinue operating system updates for the Quest 2 and Quest Pro virtual reality headsets. According to an official developer blog post, the company will cease feature development for these devices following the release of version 213, which is scheduled to reach all units by March 2027.
While major OS updates will conclude in the spring of 2027, Meta intends to maintain the devices with quarterly security patches and critical bug fixes through the end of that year. Developers will be permitted to submit new applications for the Quest 2 and Quest Pro platforms until December 2027.
Following the v213 update, Meta will no longer test new software or SDK releases against the older hardware. Future platform capabilities and operating system features will be reserved for the Quest 3, Quest 3S, and newer devices. Existing applications will continue to function on the older headsets, and users will retain the ability to engage in cross-play with newer hardware models.
The Quest 2, which launched in 2020, and the 2022 Quest Pro are being retired as the company shifts its focus toward newer hardware. The Quest 2 remains a significant device in the company's history, having reached approximately 20 million units sold during its market tenure.
