Employees at Mass General Brigham are reporting increased concern following a message from the health system's leadership sent late Monday, Nov. 2, 2026. The email from CEO Dr. Anne Klibanski addressed the organization's financial performance but omitted details regarding recent workforce reductions.
The communication arrived less than two weeks after the health system, which serves as the largest private employer in Massachusetts, began a new round of job cuts. In her message, Dr. Klibanski stated that the organization must improve its performance and make thoughtful decisions regarding the utilization of resources.
The health system has been navigating a significant budget shortfall, with reports indicating the organization is more than $300 million behind budget for fiscal 2026. These financial pressures have led to a series of operational shifts, including the consolidation of clinical programs and a reduction in the capacity of the system's Home Hospital program.
This recent round of layoffs follows a previous reduction in early 2025 that resulted in the elimination of approximately 1,500 positions. As the system works to transition toward a more integrated model of care, the lack of specific information in the latest correspondence has left staff seeking clarity on the future of their roles.
