Lakota poet and artist Layli Long Soldier is the focus of a recent feature in Hyperallergic, which highlights her latest collection, We, released in October 2026. The interview, conducted by artist Dyani White Hawk, explores the intersection of visual art and poetry in Long Soldier’s work.

The publication, authored by associate editor Lakshmi Rivera Amin on Nov. 3, 2026, includes the book as part of a monthly list of 10 recommended art titles. Long Soldier’s new collection, which has been longlisted for the 2026 National Book Award for Poetry, examines themes of history, language, and community. The title itself serves a dual purpose, referencing both the English pronoun and the Lakota word wé, which translates to blood.

During the conversation with White Hawk, Long Soldier reflected on the nature of her creative process, stating that she views creation as equivalent to love. She also addressed her approach to language, declaring a war of language as part of her artistic mission.

The Hyperallergic report also spotlights a biography of the late artist Beverly Buchanan, titled Beverly Buchanan at the Raw Edge of Art. The book examines the life and career of the polymath artist, who lived from 1940 to 2015 and was recognized for her exploration of Southern vernacular architecture and her signature shack sculptures.
