Experts see limited impact of global left-wing trends in France

Political analysts are expressing skepticism that recent left-leaning electoral outcomes in the United States and Brazil, alongside student-led protests across Europe, will significantly alter the trajectory of the 2027 French presidential election. Despite international shifts, experts suggest that the current political climate in France remains more favorable to the right.
Marine Le Pen, leader of the National Rally, currently maintains a substantial lead in polling ahead of the April 18, 2027, election. Recent data from an Ifop poll for LCI places Le Pen at 36%, while Jean-Luc Mélenchon of the France Unbowed party follows at approximately 18%. Other candidates, including center-left representative Raphaël Glucksmann and center-right figure Édouard Attal, poll at 13% and 11% respectively.
Luc Rouban, a senior research fellow at Sciences Po Paris, noted that while international events like the U.S. midterm elections may offer hope to the left, domestic public opinion in France remains anchored to the right. This sentiment is echoed by some local observers who suggest that the consolidation of right-wing factions could pose an insurmountable barrier for left-wing candidates.
The path to the 2027 election follows a significant legal development for Le Pen. Although she was convicted in March 2025 for the embezzlement of European Parliament funds, the Court of Appeal of Paris reduced her sentence on July 7, 2026. This ruling removed previous barriers to her candidacy, allowing her to proceed with her campaign alongside figures such as Jordan Bardella.
Should no candidate secure an outright majority in the first round, a runoff election is scheduled for May 2, 2027. Despite the momentum of global movements, analysts maintain that the French electorate's current alignment presents a difficult landscape for those seeking to challenge the National Rally's lead.
