René Lacerte, the CEO and founder of BILL, announced that his company has transitioned to a remote-first workplace model.

Lacerte, writing for Fast Company on Nov. 6, 2026, explained that he previously resisted moving away from a traditional office environment due to his appreciation for in-person collaboration. However, he concluded that the standard office model no longer aligned with the current needs of the business or the daily lives of his employees.

The CEO stated that the change is not intended to be anti-office, but rather a move toward prioritizing flexibility, accountability, and intentional connection. He argued that physical presence should not be used as a proxy for employee performance, noting that forcing staff into the office often resulted in workers simply sitting through video calls.

Reflecting on the evolution of workplace culture since the COVID-19 pandemic, Lacerte emphasized the importance of leadership listening to staff needs. He noted that employees are unlikely to return to traditional office rhythms, and that adapting to these changes is essential for building a more effective company.
