Berkshire Hathaway has emerged as a defensive option for investors as market volatility impacts high-growth technology stocks. The conglomerate reported its third-quarter results on Nov. 7, 2026, showing a shift in its investment portfolio during a period of broader market decline.
During the third quarter, Berkshire Hathaway purchased $2.4 billion in stocks while selling $2.8 billion. Portfolio adjustments included a $2.3 billion increase in cost basis for commercial, industrial, and other equities, alongside a $400 million reduction in holdings within the banking, insurance, and finance sectors.
Financial results for the quarter indicated that investment gains totaled $9.4 billion, a 46% decrease compared to the same period in 2025. Operating profit for the quarter was $12.71 billion, down from $13.49 billion reported in the third quarter of the previous year.
The company accelerated its share repurchase program, buying back $9.6 billion of its own stock during the quarter, more than doubling the pace of the second quarter. An additional $2 billion in repurchases occurred during the first four weeks of the fourth quarter.
Since Oct. 1, 2026, Berkshire Hathaway stock has risen 14%, contrasting with a 4% decline in the S&P 500 over the same timeframe. The company is currently led by CEO Greg Abel, with Howard Buffett serving as Chairman of the Board as of September 2026. Further details regarding the firm's specific equity positions are expected in a regulatory filing later in November.
