Following the November 2026 midterm elections, Senator Bernie Sanders is expected to become the chair of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions. This leadership role places the Vermont independent at the center of upcoming legislative discussions regarding the Food and Drug Administration.
The committee holds jurisdiction over health policy and agency oversight. With Democrats projected to maintain a Senate majority, Sanders is positioned to influence the legislative agenda, particularly concerning the must-pass reauthorization of FDA user-fee programs, which are scheduled to expire on Sept. 30, 2027.
While broad new legislation may face challenges in a divided government, analysts anticipate that lawmakers will rely on funding bills to advance policy priorities. Sanders has a history of focusing on prescription drug affordability, corporate accountability within the pharmaceutical sector, and healthcare access.
The legislative calendar includes several critical deadlines. Federal government funding is set to expire on Dec. 11, 2026, followed by the expiration of various healthcare programs, including community health center funding, on Dec. 31, 2026. These upcoming measures are expected to serve as vehicles for committee oversight and potential policy reforms.
