A recent review published in Hyperallergic evaluates Prior Occupants, a 14-minute short film by artist Alison Nguyen that examines the history of the Westbeth Artists Housing complex in New York City. The film explores the site's previous identity as the headquarters for Bell Laboratories.
Contributor Rhea Nayyar wrote that the film incorporates archival materials, including confidential files from Bell Laboratories, to investigate the building's past.
In her assessment published on Nov. 4, 2026, Nayyar described the work as fragmented. She noted that while the film is drawn from extensive research, it relies on vague information that serves to incite curiosity rather than provide a clear historical illustration. The reviewer suggested that the project would have benefited from greater legibility regarding the information presented.
Prior Occupants was scheduled for a screening on the High Line in Manhattan. The film remains a visual exploration of the transition from the site's industrial past to its current role as an artists' housing complex.
