State leaders across the country are awaiting news on their second-year funding allocations for the Rural Health Transformation Program after the federal government missed an Oct. 31, 2026, deadline.
The federal Office of Rural Health Transformation notified state officials of the delay via a mass email sent on or around Oct. 30. Alina Czekai, director of the office, stated that officials discovered an additional administrative process requirement that necessitates more time to finalize the allocations.
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, which administers the program, is now expected to notify states of their award amounts later in November.
During the first year of the program in 2026, states received individual awards ranging from $147 million to $281 million. Alan Morgan, CEO of the National Rural Health Association, noted that a national program of this size and complexity often faces implementation challenges when operating on a tight timeline.
State officials, who have been working to meet reporting requirements and project deadlines since the program's inception, currently remain in the dark regarding the specific figures for the upcoming year of funding.
