Dozens of people gathered at Takoma Academy in Takoma Park, Maryland, on the morning of Oct. 17, 2026, to receive free medical, dental, and vision care. By 4:00 a.m., approximately 80 cars were parked at the site as patients waited for the clinic, organized by Remote Area Medical, to open at 6:00 a.m.
The event drew individuals from the surrounding area, highlighting challenges regarding the affordability of healthcare services. Among those in attendance was Cheromie Johnson, a District of Columbia government employee who brought her 6-year-old son, Cairo, for vision services. Johnson noted that the free care would save them more than $1,000, adding that the services were important for her son's schooling and her own ability to drive.
Johnson also pointed to the high costs of private care, citing a recent $12,000 bill she received for dental work. Her experience reflects a broader trend of patients seeking assistance at pop-up clinics despite living in regions with high median household incomes and insurance coverage rates.
The clinic in Takoma Park, located about eight miles from the U.S. Capitol, served as a point of focus for the ongoing national conversation regarding healthcare costs during the 2026 election season. The event concluded after providing services to those who had secured spots throughout the weekend.
